Anderson Plug Cover and Flush Mount Size Guide: 50A, 120A, 175A and 350A
Anderson-style plugs are the go-to connector for caravans, 4WDs, camper trailers and battery boxes. They carry plenty of current, they're genderless, and they connect and disconnect quickly. Left dangling on a cable, though, a plug collects dust, gets knocked about and puts strain on the wiring. A proper cover or flush mount fixes that, but only if it matches the size of plug you're running.
This guide covers the four common sizes, the difference between flush and surface (external) mounting, and which VP Design mount suits each job.
Step 1: Work out which plug size you have
Anderson-style connectors are sold by current rating, and each size has a different housing. A 50A mount won't hold a 120A plug, and so on. Check the rating moulded into the plug housing or listed on your cable or charger paperwork.
- 50A: by far the most common. Used for fridges, solar blankets, DC-DC charger inputs, trailer feeds and accessory outlets.
- 120A: heavier battery-to-battery links, inverters and larger solar runs.
- 175A: high-current battery and inverter connections.
- 350A: very high-current applications such as large battery banks.
If you're replacing plugs as well, VP Design stocks 50A Anderson-style replacement connectors in grey, red and black, plus 50A contact pins in 10-packs for 6AWG and 10-12AWG cable.
Step 2: Flush mount or surface mount?
Flush mounts sit in a cut-out, so the plug face ends up level with your panel. They suit canopies, battery boxes, drawer systems, ute tubs and caravan walls where you want a tidy, factory-style finish and you're happy to cut a hole.
Surface (external) mounts bolt onto the outside of a panel, with the cable entering from behind or below. They're the pick when you can't or don't want to cut a large opening, or when there's no room behind the panel for the plug body.
50A covers and mounts
Most VP Design options are for 50A plugs, because that's what most people run:
- 50 Amp Anderson cover with label: a flush, countersunk bracket with a label area so you can tell circuits apart at camp. The faceplate is 67 mm x 35 mm with a 45 mm body depth, and stainless bolts, washers and nuts are included. The plug isn't included.
- 50 Amp Anderson cover with plug: the same idea, supplied with a grey, red or black Anderson-style plug.
- Dual 50A Anderson plug cover: horizontal or vertical layouts for two plugs.
- 50 Amp dual black external mount and the white version: surface mounts for two plugs, available with or without plugs.
- Triple 50A surface mount and the 6-stack 50A panel for setups with several circuits.
- Anderson plug dust caps (2 pack) to keep the contacts clean when nothing is plugged in.
Want USB or 12V outlets alongside your Anderson plug? See the combination panels, such as the 50A Anderson flush mount with 12V socket (voltmeter, USB, USB-C or cigarette-socket options).
120A mounts
The 120A Anderson plug panel mount comes in single or dual layouts, with or without plugs. It measures 82 mm x 63 mm x 50 mm and has pre-drilled mounting holes, suiting 12V and 24V systems. For a surface install, there's the 120A external mount, supplied with no plugs, one or two 120A plugs.
Running both 50A and 120A at the same point? The 50A and 120A dual panel mount takes one of each.
175A mounts
For 175A connectors, choose the 175A Anderson plug flush mount panel (2-pin or 3-pin versions) or the 175A external mount bracket in single, dual or flush layouts.
350A mounts
The 350A Anderson plug flush mount panel comes in flush-mount and surface-mount versions. The plug shown in the photos is for illustration only and isn't included.
Fitting tips
- Measure twice, cut once. Check the cut-out size on the product page before you drill, and confirm there's room behind the panel for the plug body and cable bend.
- Mind the polarity and colour. Only same-colour Anderson-style housings mate with each other. Using colours to separate circuits (for example red for battery, grey for solar) stops the wrong things being plugged together.
- Crimp properly. Use the correct terminal for your cable gauge and a proper crimping tool. A poor crimp is the most common cause of hot or failed Anderson connections.
- Label your circuits. A labelled cover saves guesswork in the dark.
- If in doubt, get an auto electrician to do the high-current wiring.
