Starlink Mini Car & Caravan Mount Guide: Which VANKOR Mount Is Right for Your Setup?
Mounting Starlink Mini to a vehicle sounds simple. In practice, most people get it wrong the first time — wrong mount for the roof type, no thought given to cable routing, or a cheap solution that rattles loose 50km down a corrugated track.
This guide covers the two VANKOR mounts built specifically for Australian conditions — and helps you pick the right one for your rig.
First: What You Need to Know About Mounting Starlink Mini
Starlink Mini is small and light. But that doesn't mean any mount will do.
A few things matter for a reliable install:
- Stable positioning — the dish needs a clear sky view and to stay pointed consistently
- No vibration movement — corrugations and highway speeds will expose a weak mount fast
- Clean cable routing — the cable needs to reach your power source without being pinched or exposed
- Roof type compatibility — a magnetic mount needs steel; a roof rack mount needs crossbars
Get these right and Starlink Mini becomes a genuinely reliable off-grid internet solution. Get them wrong and you're either pulling over to adjust a dish or dealing with intermittent dropouts.

Option 1: VANKOR Magnetic Roof Mount — For Caravans, Vans & Steel Roofs

The VANKOR Magnetic Roof Mount is built for anyone who wants satellite internet on their vehicle without drilling a single hole.
Place it on any flat steel roof — caravan, van, or 4WD — and it locks on through strong magnets. The key difference from cheap alternatives is the solid aluminium base. On a hot summer day, a plastic mount softens and flexes, reducing the magnetic contact with the roof. Aluminium stays rigid, keeps full surface contact, and holds the dish stable regardless of temperature.
This mount is ideal if you:
- Have a caravan or van with a flat steel roof
- Want a clean install without permanent modifications
- Move your setup between vehicles or need to remove the dish for storage
- Travel on corrugated outback roads and need something that won't shift
Available options at checkout:
- Without converter — mount only
- Complete setup with 12V DC converter and Anderson plug pre-wired
- Custom engraving (logo or name) — both converter and non-converter variants
Price: from $249.00 AUD — Pre-order the Magnetic Roof Mount
Option 2: VANKOR Roof Rack Mount — For 4WDs & Overlanders

If you're running a roof rack, the VANKOR Roof Rack Mount is the proper solution. This is a bolted, permanent install — designed to sit flush on your crossbars and stay locked, whether you're doing 110km/h on a highway or crawling corrugations 200km from the nearest town.
It's not a magnetic solution. It's engineered for travellers who need zero movement from their dish. The mount features a wedge profile designed for Australian latitudes, optimising the dish angle to improve signal acquisition and connection quality.
The 3D-printed mounting feet are designed to fit standard T-slot and oval crossbar profiles common to Rhino-Rack, Thule, and most popular rack systems.
This mount is ideal if you:
- Run a roof rack on a 4WD, ute, or wagon
- Want a permanent, bolted install that won't move
- Travel on corrugated tracks or at highway speeds regularly
- Want satellite angle optimised for Australian conditions
Available options at checkout:
- Without converter — mount only
- With 12V DC converter and Anderson plug pre-wired harness
Note: M8 bolts to secure the mount to your crossbars are not included — rack bolt specs vary by brand. Standard M8 stainless bolts from any hardware store will suit most setups.
Price: $279.00 AUD — Pre-order the Roof Rack Mount
Which One Should You Choose?
Choose the Magnetic Mount if: you have a flat steel roof on a caravan or van, you want a non-permanent install, or you need to remove the dish between trips.
Choose the Roof Rack Mount if: you're running a roof rack system on a 4WD or wagon and want a locked-down permanent install that won't move under any conditions.

Do You Need the 12V Converter?
If you're powering Starlink Mini from a 12V battery system — which covers the vast majority of caravans and 4WDs — yes, you need a converter. Starlink Mini requires 30V DC input and will not run directly off 12V.
Both mounts are available as a complete bundle with the 12V DC-DC converter and Anderson plug harness pre-wired. This is the cleanest option — one product, one order, plug and go.
Alternatively, you can buy the 12V converter separately if you already have a mount or want more connection options.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the magnetic mount hold at highway speeds?
Yes — the aluminium base maintains full surface contact with the steel roof, and the magnets are rated for vehicle use. Hundreds of Australian travellers are running this setup without issue.
Does the roof rack mount fit my rack brand?
The mounting feet are designed for standard T-slot and oval crossbar profiles common to Rhino-Rack, Thule, and similar systems. If you're unsure, contact us before ordering.
Can I use the magnetic mount on an aluminium roof?
No — the magnetic mount requires a steel roof. For aluminium or fibreglass roofs, the roof rack mount is the correct option (assuming you have crossbars), or contact us for advice.
What's the lead time?
Both mounts are currently on pre-order. Orders dispatch within 14–21 days. If you need it sooner, contact us before ordering.
Is the dish angle adjustable?
The Roof Rack Mount includes a wedge profile optimised for Australian latitudes. The Magnetic Mount sits flat on the roof — Starlink Mini's motorised dish handles fine-tuning automatically.
